Beautification Initiative: NW Highway Portal

Have you noticed our beautiful portal update?

OLHNA Board member Greg Estell, Director of Zoning and Portals, has worked hard over the last nine months to coordinate a complete portal refresh. This project has not been an easy undertaking! With some good old-fashioned elbow grease, the talent of OLH neighbor Peggy Tapp, President of Peggy Tapp Landscaping Services, Inc., and many months of city delays, our portal has been cleaned up, re-irrigated, and landscaped!

In early April, Board members power washed the portal and pulled the old, overgrown plants. Over the summer, we worked with Peggy to develop landscaping plans and pushed the city to make necessary irrigation repairs. With Peggy and Team, we completed the landscaping overhaul at the beginning of October, adding a lovely Japanese Maple, Sedum, Podocarpus Yews, Ligustrum Sunshine, Crotons, new soil, mulch, solar lighting, and pumpkins! Working with the Parks Maintenance department, we identified and repaired a valve near the portal and a leak in the water line just west of the portal. Peggy’s team switched out all sprinkler risers and heads and rerouted some lines to cover our new seasonal flower bed. We will address the faded black lettering on our sign over the next few weeks.

Greg and the OLHNA Board will lead ongoing portal maintenance. This project is part of OLHNA's Safety, Community & Beauty initiative. More to come!

Take a look at the photos below, or better yet, visit the portal in person!
