August 2021 Yard of the Month

August’s Yard-of-the-Month winner is Janice Crawford’s beautiful shade garden at 629 Kirkwood.  She has lived here for five years and was immediately attracted to the over-60-year-old Red Oak tree towering over the front yard.  Janice is a home remodeler, so she didn’t care what the inside of the house looked like; She just had to have that magnificent tree!

The front yard is a simple design of Japanese Maples, Coleus, Ajuga, Aspidistra, Grasses, Hellebores, and a few annuals for color.  The small area that receives morning sun is planted with Cotoneaster and native Columbine.

The backyard is a true oasis.  The centerpiece is a very old, very large Live Oak tree.  Underneath, she has planted a wonderful assortment of Sedum, Hosta, Creeping Jenny, Grasses, Impatiens, Heuchera, and Holly Fern.  A huge Staghorn Fern is hanging from the tree.  Nearby in a small sunny spot, she is growing tomatoes and basil in containers.  When Janice bought the house, she built a large deck to give her plenty of outdoor living space.  She also has a Palo Verde tree which is native to the Southwest but is doing well after the freeze last winter.

Janice will receive a $50 gift card from Northaven Gardens and can’t wait to use it.  Congratulations!
